Movie night with filmmakers for high school students

As part of celebrating women’s day, a screening of a locally-produced short film, “Camilla” was organised by NSTS and St Edward’s College for International students.  “Camilla” was produced in late 2018. It was funded by the National Book Council and supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany – Valletta, based on a short story of the same name by Clare Azzopardi. It was written for the screen by Teodor Reljic and Stephanie Sant, and directed by Stephanie Sant. ‘Camilla’ boasts a predominantly female cast and crew, ranging from the director, to the first assistant director, the focus puller, the editor, the sound artist, the musician and beyond. Such an assemblage of crew is still extremely rare to come across even in the biggest production companies in Europe.

Director Stephanie Sant and Producer Martin Bonnici (Shadeena Entertainment) were on hand to answer the students’ questions ranging from the theme of the film and some hidden symbolism to the local film industry and the challenges that come with producing your own short film. Through the film NSTS and IB international students were also exposed to the Maltese language and a slice of Maltese culture.

Stephanie Sant and Martin Bonnici’s contribution helped students to understand better what film making involves. Their determination and passion to make a career in the arts in Malta was a true inspiration for the future generations of students who aspire to pursue a career in the seventh art.
